Welcome to Nutrition Viewpoint

I am writing this - the very first post on my new blog - as I get ready to travel to Chicago for The American Dietetic Association's (ADA) Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE). This trip has been an annual event for me for more years than I care to remember. What's really great about FNCE is that it's a perfect blend of the old and the new. It's a chance to see lots of old friends and learn lots of new things. This year will be no exception.

A quick look at the conference agenda reveals that dietetics professionals, as usual, are on the front lines of disease prevention and health promotion in this country, exploring everything from nutrigenomics and functional foods to sustainable agriculture and fair trade. ADA will be releasing its latest public opinion survey, Nutrition and You: Trends 2008, during the conference. I will be commenting on the survey and its implications in a future posting.

In just a couple weeks, we'll have a new President and a number of new members of Congress. Regardless of who wins the election, the healthcare professions are looking at CHANGE. Nutrition science belongs in the vanguard of this change. If you are a nutrition professional, a doctor, a nurse, a physical therapist; is you are a food and nutrition academician or researcher; if you are a legislator or policymaker; if you are foodservice professional or culinarian; if you are a food or beverage marketer - now is the time to break down the silos, extend a hand and collaborate to feed a nation hungry for healthful food choices, cutting-edge research and lifestyle guidance based on science.

There are a lot of nutrition issues on the table these days. Let's talk about it.

About This Blog

I launched Nutrition Viewpoint to provide nutrition professionals, health care providers, and food and beverage marketers with a forum for examining issues, and trends that affect how we influence food and nutrition policies and how food and nutrition policies influence us. The thoughts and opinions I express in this blog are strictly my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of my clients. Readers are invited to comment on my postings, and I hope that we can engage in a lively conversation. From time to time, Nutrition Viewpoint will also feature guest bloggers. Because of my keen interest in women's nutritional health, I have devoted a special section of this blog to women's issues.
