Glimpses into the Future

Thanks to American Dietetic Association CEO Ron Moen for giving me a heads up on a comprehensive annual outlook article in the November 1 edition of The Futurist, the World Future Society's signature publication. The authors note that the forecasts compiled in the article are not so much predictions as they are glimpses into a likely future.

Here are a few of the "glimpses" that I think could have an impact in the world of food, nutrition and health.

Tourism is expected to nearly double worldwide, from 842 million international tourist arrivals in 2006 to 1.6 billion in 2020, with China as the greatest source of tourists and the most popular tourist destination. Impact: More consumer exposure to classic Asian diets and traditional herbal remedies.

It's All about Education, Education, Education

During its recent annual meeting in Chicago meeting, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) released its latest public opinion survey, Nutrition and You: Trends 2008. The association has conducted this survey seven times since 1991 to measure attitudes, knowledge, beliefs and behaviors regarding food and nutrition. Here are some of the results that I think you might find meaningful as you food and health directions for the future.

In each survey since 1991, ADA has used respondents' answers to a number of different questions to segment consumers into three groups representing overall attitudes toward maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. A comparison of survey results over the years depicts a population that is making some progress, knows it should make more and is increasingly aware and hungry for information. Yes! Bother me!

About This Blog

I launched Nutrition Viewpoint to provide nutrition professionals, health care providers, and food and beverage marketers with a forum for examining issues, and trends that affect how we influence food and nutrition policies and how food and nutrition policies influence us. The thoughts and opinions I express in this blog are strictly my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of my clients. Readers are invited to comment on my postings, and I hope that we can engage in a lively conversation. From time to time, Nutrition Viewpoint will also feature guest bloggers. Because of my keen interest in women's nutritional health, I have devoted a special section of this blog to women's issues.
